Watchably brief plant horror which reflects well on its literary roots (no pun intended). Played admirably straight, it creates a tense creepy atmosphere.
The Ruins is a refinement of the detestable The Hills Have Eyes remake, in that it is not particularly scary except by sheer force of gruesome image. This is the kind of movie that you cringe at while watching, which is further amplified by acting that doesn't totally suck. The main doctor guy is bad but he doesn't really have much to do - characters with long, elaborate death scenes go through the motions with surprising vigor. There was definitely some talent attached to this project.
Meh, more later, it's 1 in the morning
This was better than i expected. Decent ride. Some gorey parts on the unrated version may be a bit too much for some.
I liked this movie, actually, which was...surprising. It was well-made and lowery, the performances satisfactory(personally, best acting job did Jena Malone, Jonathan Tucker and Joe Anderson) and the storyline was audacious. It was disturbing at times, ridiculous at others, but generally, a good horror movie that deserves some attention, especially from the fans of the genre.
Just saw the trailer, looks interesting, however the flixster plot and the pictures and most peoples reviews havent been too good. Im just wondering if they lacked imagination for this movie or what.
I want to watch it tho. >;P'
A group of irritating American teenagers being tormented by evil vines sure doesn't sound like a plot that could possibly make a good film, so the movie in itself is a somewhat overwhelmingly pleasant surprise. The actual story and events (though obviously taken from the book on which it is based) manage to be original without being pretentious, and structured without being conventional, which is an impressive balance considering the downfall of the horror genre in recent years. As well as a nice amount of enjoyable gore, 'The Ruins' also has a respectable humour to it- it's one of the rare horror films you will laugh with and not at, as it really feels like the writers had fun driving their characters mad and giving them stupid lines. The cast is okay, but most of the performances are crushed beneath the brilliance of Jena Malone. Possibly the best horror flick of the year, and definitely worth getting hold of...
the ending wasent crap they had to do it that way to leave the film open to a sequel beaucase if it does more than reasonably ok at the cinema then they will do another beacause there is loads of places they can take the film thank yiou
**Possible Spoilers if you havent seen it yet**
To anyone wondering about the "sacrifice": There was no sacrifice. The tourists thought at one point they were being sacrificed, but as they explained later, the villagers were only forced them to stay there and die becuase they figured once they touched the plants, they were "contaminated" and didn't want it to spread. They want to keep it contained. That's why they mentioned how they salted the earth so the plants couldn't grow out farther, and even animals and birds learned not to go there. The villagers were not evil villains, they were simply protecting themselves and the rest of the jungle.
p.s. the only problem I have is with the ending - very quick and anti-climactic
Anyone who thinks this was boring isn't looking for a scary movie, they just want gore. It's nice to see a horror flick that doesn't rely on cheap scares or over-the-top gore and kills. The Ruins instead opts for a much more effective slowly growing sense of fear and dread. I'll take something like this over the entire Saw and Hostel series any day.
And ya gotta give it credit for not watering down for a PG13 like so many lame horror flicks these days.
The film delivers several creepy & gory moments that are very effective besides some great performances by the cast. What i didn't get was a good explanation related to the sacrifice & a ending that was totally a disappointment but other that,it was a enjoyable & gruesome horror film.
